Stiff Records was at the heart of the new wave, bringing the world artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Kirsty MacColl, Madness and Ian Dury and what is generally regarded as the first ever punk rock single, New Rose by The Damned. In the dark days of the mid-70s, when gatefold-sleeved albums were the hippest things on the block, it wasn’t much fun being a pop fan. A change had to come, and it came via the highly influential Stiff Records. Founded nearly 40 years ago in July 1976 by Jake Riviera and Dave Robinson, two movers and shakers from the burgeoning London pub rock circuit.
