Batlhako Mining Limited, a former subsidiary of Samancor Limited, is the owner of the Ruighoek Chrome Mine, situated in the western bushveld of South Africa, approximately two hours drive north west of Johannesburg. South Africa's bushveld complex holds 80% of the world's reserves of chromite and is the site of more than 50% of the world's production. Chrome is a bulk commodity industrial mineral used primarily in the manufacture of stainless steel, with 90% of the world's production of 18,000,000 tons (2005) of chromite used in this process. The remaining 10% of the production is consumed in the refractory, chemical and foundry industries.
