Bio

David Jordan is a highly creative patent prosecutor, renowned for his ability to harvest valuable and viable inventions from technical disclosures that are highly complex, weak or unfocused, or rooted in subject matter that is disfavored by global patent offices. With a plain-speaking and direct personal style, David advises clients in the management of their patent portfolios with a focus on maximizing business value. David has secured thousands of issued U.S. patents for his clients, including more than a thousand software patents since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2014 Alice decision. David focuses his practice on strategic client counseling and software patent prosecution. With an encyclopedic knowledge of his clients’ technologies, David meticulously crafts claims that lead to allowances and has an impressive record of arguing for patent protection for innovations that are especially difficult to obtain. In the computer software field, David has prepared and prosecuted patent applications for inventions involving user interfaces and human-computer interaction, business intelligence, data analytics, operating systems, cognitive computing, artificial neural networks, query optimization and processing, and speech, image, and handwriting recognition. Outside of the computer software field, David has significant hands-on experience with patent applications related to e-commerce, business-process and financial modeling, advertising, avionics, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). His experience also extends to health care management, supply chain traceability, satellites, lasers, consumer electronics, games, and toys. In recent years, David has developed a special focus in technical areas related to sustainability, and he is most proud of his work relating to sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, green computing, fusion power, and renewable fuels. David also engages in a number of pro bono projects. He has represented disabled veterans in their appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, and he manages prosecution of a substantial number of pro bono patent applications referred to him through California Lawyers for the Arts and the Federal Circuit Bar Association. David has worked in Fish & Richardson's Washington, D.C., and San Diego offices, as well as the London and Orange County offices of his prior firms. While in London, David qualified as a British solicitor, although he currently practices as a U.S. patent attorney only. David is a member of the California, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., bars. Before joining Fish, David received his commission as an officer in the U.S. Navy and served in Japan as an aircraft maintenance officer. David studied law as an evening student at the University of San Diego while working full time as a naval officer at the naval air station in Coronado, California. As a law student, David was a judicial extern for the Honorable James F. Stiven, now retired, of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California in San Diego, California.
