Shahid Sulaiman Bio

Shahid is the Head of the Corporate Practice Group of Dentons in South Africa. With more than 20 years of experience, his legal practice is focused on assisting clients with M&A, project development, corporate finance, corporate structuring and governance and commercial transactions. Shahid has worked with clients in a diverse range of sectors, including the banking and finance, private equity, energy, power, utility, NPOs, construction and transportation sectors, amongst others. He has acted for multinational oil firms on a range of matters from advising on industry wide agreements, supply contracts (between oil companies, and between oil companies and retailers and bulk end-users), sponsorship arrangements, terminal and depot operation agreements through to restructuring subsidiary relationships and joint ventures between oil companies in relation to storage facilities and the supply of petroleum products. He has also advised on structured funding arrangements with various banks, group-wide pension fund arrangements, in addition to advising on draft regulations promulgated under the Petroleum Products Act, and advising on the Consumer Protection Act. Shahid has significant exposure to the M&A, banking and finance, and general commercial sectors, having advised various clients on acquisitions and disposals, Islamic finance, banking regulatory issues, the Companies Act, financial services, private equity funds (fund formation, transactions and wrappers), hedge funds and funding arrangements. Shahid has also advised family offices on the structuring of private equity funds to warehouse investments and the related acquisitions, in addition to the financial services laws applicable to their operations. In addition, he is experienced in advising both franchisees and franchisors on legal and commercial matters affecting franchising and distribution in South Africa.
