Joel Bock Bio

Joel N. Bock is a partner in Dentons Venture Technology practice. Joel's practice focuses on counseling companies in various industry sectors—including AI, Blockchain, Telecom, Energy, Life Sciences —regarding a wide range of intellectual property issues, as well as structuring and negotiating transactions involving IP assets, including mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings, private placements, strategic investments, licensing, strategic alliances and the drafting and negotiation of contracts. Joel regularly counsels clients with respect to IP asset assessment and valuation, including risk analysis, portfolio analysis, patent opinion work, including freedom to operate and patentability, design-around strategies, strategic planning and executing trade secret protection. He also advises clients with respect to portfolio development, management and growth strategies and Open Source issues. The technologies that he has reviewed and analyzed include AI systems and training models, blockchain technologies, telecommunications transceivers, equipment and electronics, semiconductors, nanotechnology, optical systems, software applications and systems, clean energy systems, manufacturing, business methods, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, chemicals, automotive and others. Joel has litigated complex patent infringement suits relating to such technologies as Ad tech, call center systems, cloud storage, data backup, optical switches and systems, medical devices, semiconductor chips and packages, telecommunications systems, electronic circuit designs, MEMS-based sensors, electronic time stamping and authentication, automated pattern digitalization, machine tools systems, plastic extrusion, fuel injection systems and pharmaceuticals. He represents clients with respect to IP enforcement and defense of trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights. Joel has been recognized by Chambers USA as one of the leading practitioners in the IP sector for 15 consecutive years, most recently in 2022. Before his career in law, Joel was a design engineer in the field of spread spectrum communications systems. Joel is registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. He has successfully prosecuted patent applications in a variety of fields, including AI based systems, Ad tech, clean energy technologies, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, automotive systems, electronics, software and systems, software systems, printing, packaging, optics, holography and mechanical devices. He is also involved in trademark and copyright prosecution and strategic counseling.
