Simon Grout Bio

Simon Grout is a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in London. He is in the Global Insurance Services practice in the Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment. Simon is a qualified actuary and has worked in consultancy specializing in merger and acquisitions, risk and capital management all over the world particularly in the UK, the Nordic countries and the Middle East. Simon has more than 35 years of experience as both an actuarial and management consultant in the insurance industry across EMEA. He has a strong technical background and holds both Chief Actuary and With Profits Actuary certificates. His regulatory roles also include acting as Independent Expert on both Part VII transfers and s166 reports in the UK and similar roles in Europe, including Sweden. As well as his solid technical background, Simon bridges the gap between his actuarial training and implementing a practical, pragmatic approach to his clients’ problems, having spent over half his career as a Partner at Oliver Wyman, a strategy and risk consultancy. This is a useful skill in both strategic and transformation engagements where projects can stumble or even fail to deliver the full benefits if the technical teams struggle to communicate to the less technical members of the project team. His expertise includes capital optimisation of insurance company balance sheets, actuarial and commercial due diligence, design and implementation of finance, capital and risk management frameworks, and mergers & acquisitions. Simon started his career in 1987 at Bacon & Woodrow where he qualified as an actuary in 1991. He joined William M. Mercer’s UK Life Insurance Practice in 1995 and was made a Partner of Mercer in 1996. Upon the purchase of Oliver Wyman by Marsh McLennan in 2003, he transferred to Oliver Wyman’s EMEA Insurance Practice where he worked principally in the UK, Middle East and Nordic Region.
