David Jones is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal Private Equity Performance Improvement practice in London. He brings more than 25 years of experience as an operator and adviser in the chemicals, oil and wider process industries. He is an expert in operational due diligence (ODD) and performance transformation, focusing on optimization of manufacturing assets, organization design and head-count reduction, go-to-market strategy, and trading of commodities. Most recently at A&M, Mr. Jones led the ODD for the carve-out of two specialty chemicals businesses and of a liquid purification business, led the ODD of a leading phosphonates producer, including a review of growth options, and served as an Industry Expert Lead to a business plan review for a polymer producer facing liquidity issues. Additionally, Mr. Jones has co-led ODDs of major FMCG carve-outs in the spreads and tissues markets where A&M identified material opportunities across trade terms, procurement, manufacturing and SG&A. He went on to lead the post-deal implementation of the R&D transformation work-stream for the spreads situation. Mr. Jones also led a performance diagnostic and subsequent improvement implementation for a consumer packaging producer that resulted in a $15 million EBITDA improvement potential (+69%), and a major oil field that resulted in the identification of $16-23 million+ of potential EBITDA (8-13% improvement). Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Jones was the Founder of Industrial Commercial Ventures (ICV), a boutique advisory firm, where he provided operational analysis for private equity and industrial clients in the chemicals, oil and gas, and biofuels sectors. He also spent 15 years with BP in strategic commercial and chemical engineering roles. He gained deep experience across the oil and chemicals value chain including leading pioneering commercial activity that resulted in significant margin improvement and risk reduction. He later served as Commercial Director of Innovene, a carve-out of BP’s chemicals division that was sold to INEOS, responsible for $3 billion of purchases / sales and for the successful restructuring of the market facing base chemicals commercial function. Mr. Jones earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Bradford and an MBA from London Business School. He is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.
