Dr. Gregory Thiel is the Director of Technology at Energy Impact Partners (EIP). His focus is driving excellence in technical diligence and building novel, technology-centric investment theses. Prior to EIP, he served at ARPA-E in the U.S. Department of Energy, where he helped develop new R&D programs and deploy over $40M in funding for climate and energy technologies. While there, he initiated the agency’s first program in direct air and ocean capture, and supported efforts on tough-to-decarbonize sectors, such as industrial heat and aviation. His technical career includes previous postings engineeringautomotive climate control and battery cooling systems, as well as performing research on desalination systems. Gregory holds a Ph.D. from MIT and a B.S.E., summa cum laude, from Case Western Reserve, both in mechanical engineering. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles in thermal sciences, water, and energy systems, and is a co-inventor on nine patents.
