James is Managing Partner and head of the London Discretionary Investment Management division. With over 50 years of experience in the investment management industry he founded Thornhill Investment Management in 1985 and later Salisbury Partners in 2007, which became part of Alvarium in 2015. Having read Classics at Oxford University, James has spent all of his working life in the wealth management industry. After 15 years at Lazard Brothers managing unit trusts, offshore funds and private client portfolios in the UK and abroad, he founded Thornhill Investment Management, a private client asset management firm, in 1985. He continued as Chairman until 2007, when he established Salisbury Partners, a multi-family office based in Mayfair, which was acquired by Alvarium in 2015 and forms the UK focused discretionary management team in London. James was a director of the Rank Foundation from 2000 to 2015 and Chairman of its Finance Committee from 2009 to 2014. He has also been a director of Lazard World Trust Fund.
