Bio

Nick Mathys is a ‘Ranked Individual’ in Chambers 2016. He is a fluent Japanese speaker with enormous experience of working with Japanese clients and advisers. Nick, a partner at White & Black, has developed the Japanese practice at White & Black from its inception. His Japanese clients range from global technology giants such as Nikon, NTT Docomo and the “Big 4” Japanese law firms through to precision manufacturers, multinational trading companies and online games developers. Nick trained and qualified at Baker & McKenzie and spent many years working in Tokyo for Herbert Smith before joining White & Black in 2012. He has extensive experience of cross-border M&A work and is a specialist in data protection, cyber security and ICT contracts. Nick studied Japanese at Leeds University and graduated with first class honours. In 2000 he won a national Japanese speech contest. Since then, Nick has developed his legal practice so as to combine his interests in business and Japanese culture. Nick advises clients on information and communications law and the legal aspects of sourcing and supplying innovative technology services, bringing online entertainment to market and commercially exploiting intellectual property, especially in relation to the licensing of patents, trade marks, software and content. Nick has worked on corporate transactions and commercial and regulatory matters in jurisdictions spanning Europe, the Middle East, India, South East Asia and Japan. Nick has many non-Japanese clients spanning diverse sectors including health-tech pioneer Oxford Bioelectronics, premium streetwear brand Palace Skateboards and digital content trailblazer Immedia plc. Nick is always active! You will find him out running in the hills, cooking in the kitchen, or enjoying cheese and wines from around the world.
