John Fadely is a partner in the Hong Kong office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and is a member of the firm’s Investment Funds Practice Group. Mr. Fadely focuses on advising Asia-based private fund sponsors on the formation of private investment funds, including buyout funds, growth capital funds, venture capital funds and real estate funds. He has advised well-established and first-time fund sponsors on the establishment and structuring of funds platforms and is experienced in forming funds investing in China, Japan and other Asian markets. He also advises founders on governance and economics matters. In addition to fund formation, Mr. Fadely also advises fund sponsors on co-investment transactions as well as regulatory and other operational issues, and represents institutional investors in their private fund investments. Year after year, Mr. Fadely is ranked in Band 1 for Investment Funds by Chambers Asia Pacific, as a leading individual for Investment Funds by The Legal 500, and as a highly regarded practitioner by IFLR1000. He is also listed in International Who’s Who of Private Funds Lawyers. An interviewed client remarked, “He understands the private equity business inside out and he’s very nice to deal with but can handle the most difficult parties.” Another interviewed client noted, “His experience of both working in the US but also being absolutely fluent in Mandarin gives him quite a competitive advantage.” Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner in the Hong Kong office of Weil Gotshal since 2010, where he led Weil’s Asia private funds practice. Mr. Fadely earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1999, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar, and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. He is admitted to practice in New York, California, and Hong Kong.
