Bio

Alex is a competition, regulatory and commercial law specialist who advises clients across a broad range of legal issues, notably those in the media, telecoms, sports and retail sectors. Alex has significant experience dealing with UK, EU and international competition and regulatory authorities and has been involved in a number of contentious competition and regulatory cases before the courts. Alex regularly advises clients on the risks of anti-competitive agreements and cartel activities and counsels dominant and non-dominant clients on the risks and opportunities presented by the rules that prohibit abuse of a dominant position. He also devises and manages compliance programs for clients. Alex has significant experience advising on competition issues raised by mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures, including notifications to the competition authorities for clearance, and has acted on several cross-border transactions involving multiple filings. Another key part of Alex’s practice is the provision of regulatory and broader commercial advice to clients in the media, telecoms and sports sectors. He is particularly well known for advising on issues relating to the exploitation of sports broadcasting rights, having acted for both major rights holders and broadcasters on such matters. Alex cut his teeth in this area acting for the FA Premier League in its long-running investigation by the EU competition authorities and has since advised on such matters affecting the football, cricket, F1, rugby union, tennis and horse racing industries. Alex is a member of the editorial board of LawInSport, a leading online international publication that provides commentary and analysis on the latest issues and legal developments affecting the sports industry. He also sits on the board of the Association of Interactive Media and Entertainment (AIME), which represents companies across the mobile telephony supply chain, several of whom he advises in a legal capacity.
