Bio

Omar Zúñiga A. Is A Partner In The Mexico City Office. His practice focuses on Tax, where he specializes in tax law with an emphasis on international tax aspects, providing advice to multinational companies doing business in Mexico and Mexican companies doing business abroad. His practice also comprises tax aspects on M&A transactions, private equity and tax controversies. For almost 20 years, Mr. Zúñiga has worked in the tax practice area in Mexico, becoming one of the most well-known and recognized tax practitioners on the market. Mr. Zúñiga has advised on tax matters of different ongoing M&A transactions, including the acquisitions of large real estate holdings, capital businesses, fiscal audits and has been counsel in diverse financing and financial factoring operations. Most notably, Mr. Zúñiga advised Blackstone in the acquisition of GE Real Estate’s portfolio in Mexico for a $3.5b USD transaction. He also advised the Cadillac Fairview (Ontario Teachers Pension Plan) in a $250m USD real estate investment with a Mexican group and most recently, he advised GE Capital in the disposition of its leasing and lending platform in Mexico to Linzor in a $1.1b USD transaction, among many others. He has also settled notable tax controversies before the Tax Administration Service on behalf of large Mexican and International clients and provides regular tax advise to multiple companies on a variety of industries. During his tenure as GE Mexico’s country tax leader, Mr. Zúñiga was recognized as “One of the 10 Best Tax Directors in Latin America” by International Tax Review in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In its 2015 edition, the Legal 500 stated that Mr. Zúñiga “brings both international experience and an in-house perspective, (and) is hailed as a real point of reference”. Mr. Zúñiga is member of the International Fiscal Association and its Studies and BEPS Committees and has published various articles in Tax Notes International on different tax issues. He has lectured at the Postgraduate Tax Studies Department of the Escuela Libre de Derecho for more than 10 years. Mr. Zuñiga has also been a frequent speaker at the International Fiscal Association (Paris 2011), at the Mexican Studies Committee of the Universidad Complutense in Madrid in 2012 and 2013, the University of San Diego in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, the Mexican Taxpayer’s Defense Office, The Mexican Bar Association and at the Escuela Libre de Derecho in 2013. Mr. Zuñiga obtained his law degree (JD) from the Escuela Libre de Derecho (Magna cum Laude) in 1995, and obtained his LL.M on International Taxation from New York University in 1997. Additionally, he conducted Postgraduate Studies in Tax Law from the Escuela Libre de Derecho in 1996. He is fluent in Spanish and English and also speaks colloquial German.
