From 1998 until co-founding CDH, Schonberger was a Vice President in CICC’s private equity group. From 1987 to 1994, Schonberger worked at The First National Bank of Chicago in New York providing corporate finance services. After leaving First Chicago, he returned to China to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, becoming the founding partner in two joint ventures and providing advisory services to a number of foreign companies regarding their operations in China. Schonberger received his MBA degree from New York University's Stern School of Business and his B.A. from Wesleyan University.
