Mr. Hentschel is a Senior Managing Director and head of the M&A and Corporate Advisory Group in HFF’s New York office with more than 27 years of experience as a real estate investment banker during which he has completed more than $78 billion of transactions. Mr. Hentschel joined the firm to head HFF’s M&A and Corporate Advisory group upon HFF’s acquisition of Hentschel & Company in March 2017, which was originally founded by Mr. Hentschel in May 2013. Prior to starting Hentschel & Company, he founded the real estate investment banking group at Gleacher & Company in 2009. While there, Mr. Hentschel built it into a practice that was the No. 1-ranked REIT M&A advisor by transaction value in the United States league tables in 2012, advising on five transactions with a value of $29.5 billion. Mr. Hentschel previously spent three years at Wachovia Securities from 2006 to 2009 as head of the New York Real Estate Investment Banking office and 10 years at Lehman Brothers from 1996 to 2006 as a senior member of its Global Real Estate Group. From 1990 to 1996, he worked at Prudential Securities in CMBS and residential mortgage and asset-backed securitization businesses and also advised the Resolution Trust Corp. As part of a diverse career in real estate, Mr. Hentschel has advised on M&A, raised private capital, book run IPOs, raised public capital, written fairness opinions, and has made principal investments that include the landmark take-private of Gables Residential for $3 billion that initiated the REIT go-private wave of 2005 to 2007. His property sector experience includes multifamily, office, lodging, retail, malls, triple net lease, manufactured home communities, single family rentals, industrial, timeshare, self storage, student housing, specialty finance and mortgage REITs.
