Bio

Michael Kang is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal’s Private Equity Services in San Francisco. Mr. Kang specializes in providing interim management and performance improvement services to both healthy and underperforming companies. With more than 20 years of diverse financial advisory experience, Mr. Kang has a deep background working with executive teams and financial sponsors in senior advisory and interim C-suite roles, providing business performance improvement, working capital optimization and services to enhance and develop back-office finance functions. His experience spans both public and private companies. Mr. Kang has served in numerous interim management positions, including Chief Financial Officer, Chief Restructuring Officer, Controller, Receiver and Trustee. He has worked across multiple industries including: technology, education, manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, broadcasting, construction, mining, gaming and hospitality. Mr. Kang has assisted clients with fundraising, capital markets transactions and IPO readiness services and has served as an expert witness and testified in federal court matters. Mr. Kang’s most recent engagement experience includes Revel Systems, Inc. (Interim CFO), Cardiac Science Corporation (CFO and CRO), ShengdaTech, Inc. (CRO and Trustee), China-Biotics (Receiver) and Rodeo Creek Gold, Inc. (CFO). Mr. Kang also recently served as CFO of Knowledge Universe, the largest private provider of early childhood education services with revenue in excess of $1.4 billion. He was responsible for financial planning and analysis (FP&A), accounting, internal audit, procurement, treasury, tax and IT. Mr. Kang oversaw numerous cost reduction, fleet rationalization and revenue enhancement initiatives which resulted in year-over-year EBITDA growth of 65 percent. Prior to A&M, Mr. Kang spent 10 years with the corporate restructuring and dispute analysis practices of two Big Four accounting firms in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Mr. Kang earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California Los Angeles and an MBA from the University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA).
