James Bailey is a well-known and well-respected attorney in the long-term care transactions community. His practice focuses almost exclusively on transactions in the senior housing space. Jim and his team have closed multiple senior housing transactions each year for the past several years, including sizeable multi-facility portfolios spanning multiple states as well as transactions setting records for the highest price per bed in given markets. He represents some of the largest participants in the industry. Jim regularly serves as lead counsel for buyers and sellers in skilled nursing, assisted living, continuing care retirement community, home health, and independent living deals. He and his team draft and negotiate transaction documents; form joint ventures; negotiate loan documents with term, working capital, and HUD lenders; and advise on regulatory matters such as licensure, certification, and payor enrollment. Jim also provides counsel to clients purchasing distressed assets in the senior housing space. Jim speaks annually on trends in nursing home transactions and has served as a guest speaker to a national senior housing brokerage firm, sharing market insights. He sees himself first and foremost as a counselor to his clients, helping them grow in the very active senior housing space. Jim has been named among Virginia's "Legal Elite" in the Young Lawyer (Under 40) category by Virginia Business (2018-2020) and for Business Law (2021-present). He is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America® (2022) and in Virginia Super Lawyers as a "Rising Star" for Business/Corporate (2022). Jim remains active in both the Richmond and Hampton Roads communities. He is a board member for the American Heart Association’s Greater Richmond Chapter; he is on the board of trustees and is pro bono counsel for GraceInside, Virginia’s Prison Chaplain Service; and he teaches a weekly faith-based re-entry class at a local state prison.
