Jonathan Kelly is co-leader of the firm’s global Insurance and Financial Services group, leader of Sidley’s Insurance practice in New York and Boston, and member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Jon represents insurance companies, financial institutions, investors and regulators in transactional matters, including mergers and acquisitions, reinsurance, risk transfer, and restructuring transactions. Jon regularly represents both financial and strategic clients in acquisitions and dispositions and has been involved in the ongoing regulatory discussion regarding the role of financial investors in the insurance and reinsurance industry. He also advises on insurance regulatory issues concerning data breaches and cybersecurity. Strong guidance of his clients has earned Jon recognition in Chambers USA (2020–2023) for Insurance: Transactional & Regulatory. In the 2021 edition, clients note that he is “incredibly thoughtful and thorough in his legal analysis,” is “a very skilled negotiator and does an exceptional job of defending our positions and challenging problematic positions,” and “is a very well-respected lawyer and he has a practical approach to deals and gets things done in a way that works best for both clients.” In 2022, clients praised Jon as “tremendously talented” and a “well-respected insurance lawyer.” The 2022 edition also underscores “both his wealth of experience and a willingness to roll up his sleeves and dig into the detailed nuances of complex deals.” He is also ranked a “Best Lawyer” in the field of Insurance Law in the 2015–2021 editions of The Best Lawyers in America and recommended for Insurance: Non-Contentious in The Legal 500 US 2017.
