Howard King is a partner in the Charlotte office and his practice focuses on complex business transactions, including domestic and international mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, infrastructure projects, securities offerings, equity and debt financing transactions, workouts and restructurings, and commercial matters. His corporate finance practice includes representing borrowers, issuers, buyers, and investors in leveraged buyouts and acquisition financings, senior debt financings, subordinated and mezzanine debt financings, and other financial transactions. Howard regularly represents domestic and international companies, private equity firms and portfolio companies, non-bank lenders, sponsors, founders and private investors, and public and closely-held companies. His extensive experience with transactional and advisory matters spans many industry sectors, with a focus on businesses in the manufacturing, transportation and logistics, technology, and financial industries. Howard has helped clients navigate some of their most sensitive legal issues, including employee fraud and other white collar matters, banking and compliance issues, intellectual property infringement claims, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) matters, and shareholder disputes. Clients and colleagues trust Howard to understand the big picture and to execute and close deals. Howard spends time getting to know his clients and their businesses, which allows him to understand their current and future goals and challenges. Howard also advised and counseled hundreds of businesses on COVID-19 relief programs, as well as compliance with the CARES Act and related legislation, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), the Main Street Lending Program (MSLP), Employee Retention Tax Credits (ERCs), COVID-19 EIDL Loans, Shuttered Venue Grants, and the Restaurant Revitalization Fund. His work with clients in these areas continues and he regularly advises on and assists with appeals before the Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Hearing and Appeals, IRS and SBA audits, M&A transactions where COVID-19 relief programs are an issue, and ongoing compliance issues related to PPP Loans, MSLP Loans, ERCs, and other relief programs. Before joining Shumaker, Howard practiced in the Charlotte office of an international law firm. Prior to that, he was with a sophisticated boutique law firm in Charlotte and in-house counsel for one of the world’s largest marine terminal operators.
