Bio

Farah N. Ansari, a tax attorney and Co-chair of the Nonprofit practice group, has a particular focus and interest in nonprofits and provides advice on various issues that affect both New York and New Jersey nonprofit entities. She counsels on issues relating to the formation of public charities and private foundations, including those with foreign operations. She also provides guidance on supporting organization issues, the unrelated business income tax, private foundation excise taxes, including potential self-dealing, issues relating to private operating foundations, nonprofit governance, the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act, fundraising and real property tax exemption. She works with charities, foundations, educational organizations, arts organizations, hospitals, and other nonprofit organizations. Ms. Ansari's practice also covers various aspects of estate planning, including drafting charitable remainder trusts. With more than a decade of general tax experience, Ms. Ansari provides guidance to businesses and individuals on various issues relating to federal and state taxation. This includes advice in connection with IRC Section 1031 transactions, IRS Offshore Voluntary Disclosures, investment tax credits and executive compensation issues in connection with IRC Section 83 and Section 409A. Ms. Ansari is experienced in handling both federal and state tax controversies in relation to income, withholding tax and sales and use tax issues. She represents clients before the taxing authorities, in audits and in negotiating settlements, and has appeared in New Jersey Tax Court. Ms. Ansari is the immediate-past Chair of the Taxation Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and is currently Co-chair of the Tax-Exempt Organizations Committee of the Taxation Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association. She is currently serving on the Supreme Court Committee on the Tax Court. Ms. Ansari is a Board Member of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County. Ms. Ansari has published "Taxes on Executive Compensation for Tax-Exempt Employers" in New Jersey Lawyer. She has also published “In the Line of Fire: Helping Employees After a Disaster,” in COMMERCE and “The Leveraged Partnership-Have Your Cake and Eat it Too,” in The Practical Tax Lawyer. Ms. Ansari speaks extensively on tax-related topics. Ms. Ansari received her LL.M. in Taxation from New York University, School of Law and her J.D. from Rutgers School of Law – Newark, where she was an editor of the Rutgers Law Review, a board member of the Rutgers Moot Court Board, and a teaching and research assistant for Legal Research & Writing.
