Over the course of Jamal Muhammad’s legal career, which includes private practice and public service, he has developed a reputation for being tenacious, strategic, and efficient. Jamal earned that reputation both in the courtroom and the corporate boardroom. During his tenure as a Trial Attorney for Federal Defenders of San Diego, Jamal was known for innovative legal strategies. For example, he was able to use the directives of one federal law enforcement agency against another to secure the dismissal of a case where his client was apprehended with contraband strapped to his body and allegedly confessed. Jamal and other attorneys in the district were thereafter able to obtain dismissals in hundreds of criminal cases due to Jamal’s pioneering strategy. In private practice, Jamal has secured millions of dollars in damages, defended clients in class action lawsuits, and has helped clients to testify in front of government agencies and committees. Further, in addition to the investigations that he led at the Federal Defenders’ Office, he has led and participated in civil investigations involving derivative shareholder litigation, sexual harassment, wire fraud, mail fraud, and honest services fraud.
