Kurt, a member in the Private Client Group, Chair of the firm’s Closely Held Business Group, Co-chair of the Private Equity Practice, and member of the firm's Policy Committee, focuses his multi-pronged practice on estate planning, sophisticated tax planning, general corporate matters with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, and employment matters. In his estate planning practice, Kurt assists individuals and families in planning and carrying out tax-efficient transfers of wealth, asset distribution, trust administration, charitable gift planning, and business succession. He has been ranked repeatedly, most recently in 2024, in Chambers’ High Net Worth Guide in the category of “Massachusetts – Private Wealth Law.” Kurt is a Member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), and he is a recipient of the Boston Estate Planning Council’s Excellence Award. Kurt’s multi-disciplinary background of corporate, tax, and personal estate planning – coupled with middle market buy-side experience representing private equity sponsors – lends itself to unique ‘big picture’ representation for privately-held businesses and founder-owned businesses as they prepare for and navigate a sell-side transaction. He specializes in advising family businesses, start-ups, and emerging companies in a variety of sectors on organization and financing, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and succession planning. Additionally, Kurt advises executives on employment agreements, SEC issues, stock options, and deferred compensation matters for his estate planning clients. He is a frequent lecturer for the Boston Estate Planning Council, Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, the Boston Bar Association, the Boston Security Analysts Society, and other organizations. In addition, he regularly publishes articles in publications including Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, the National Law Journal, and the Boston Business Journal. Before joining Mintz, Kurt was a tax consultant at Arthur Andersen LLP. Prior to that, he served as a law clerk for the Estate and Gift Tax Division of the Internal Revenue Service.
