John Badman IV, managing principal of the firm’s Richmond office, represents middle market private equity sponsors with the acquisition financing and refinancing of their portfolio companies. He advises across the spectrum of traditional sponsors, independent sponsors and search funds. Although his clients are usually industry agnostic, John has extensive experience with government contracts clients, health care, retail, distribution and hospitality services. John has significant expertise representing general corporate borrowers in bilateral, club and fully syndicated deals. His representation spans multibillion-dollar debt facilities for Fortune 500 borrowers to much smaller growth companies and the swath of borrowers in between. He routinely assists borrowers with inquiries regarding loan administration, including ongoing compliance inquiries, waivers, amendments and consents. John has represented bank lenders in secured and unsecured term, revolving and bridge loan facilities. He is familiar with family office and other high-net-worth investors providing direct lending. He has work-out and distressed debt experience, including coordinating across teams with bankruptcy partners to protect client interests. John has provided hundreds of hours of pro bono service over his legal career, including ongoing work with the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project’s Screening Committee reviewing cases of prisoners maintaining their innocence. John was appointed to a second consecutive term as chair of the Richmond Bar Association’s Membership Committee for the bar year 2025-26. He previously served as chair of the association's Pro Bono Committee from 2021-22.
