Bio

Thomas Patterson is a member of KTBS. Mr. Patterson has represented debtors, creditors’ committees, and secured creditors in many large chapter 11 cases, and has also been involved in many significant insurer insolvency matters in California. Recently, he has been involved in a series of restructurings in the healthcare area, in and out-of-court, on behalf of a publicly-traded REIT, and represented the interests of a significant group of survivors of child sexual abuse in the Boy Scouts of America chapter 11 case. Mr. Patterson graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy with First Class Honors. He attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence (First Class) in 1984 and a Bachelor of Civil Law (First Class) in 1985. He served as a Bigelow Fellow and Lecturer in Law at The Law School, University of Chicago, 1985—86. After being named partner at Sidley & Austin in 1993, he joined KTBS as a partner in 2002. Mr. Patterson has represented many Chapter 11 debtors, including Brotman Medical Center, the developer of the Lake Las Vegas Resort and Development, All Star Gas, Thorpe Insulation Company (special appellate counsel in connection with a plan proposed under section 524(g) of the Bankruptcy Code), Imagyn Medical Technologies, Inc., Aquarius Promotional Enterprises, Inc. and Cool Fuel Incorporated. Mr. Patterson also has extensive experience in representing secured creditors, including, the secured creditor in the chapter 11 case of The Legacy Estates Group, LLC, involving the Freemark Abbey, Arrowood and Byron wineries, and the lenders in Global Aviation, Anchor Blue Retailing and Corvest Promotional Products, and many out-of-court matters. Mr. Patterson represented the acquirer of the on-going insurance business in Superior National Insurance Company, the Missouri Director of Insurance in connection with the rehabilitation of General American Mutual Holding Company, the acquirer of the on-going insurance business in Executive Life Insurance Company, a major reinsurer who successfully opposed, on appeal, the proposed Final Liquidation Dividend Plan for Mission Insurance Companies, and the liquidating trustees of the Golden Eagle Liquidating Trust established in connection with the conservation and liquidation of Golden Eagle Insurance Company. Mr. Patterson has represented many committees, including the Official Creditors’ Committees in Maxicare, Sun World International, Inc. and Decora, and an informal committee of hospital creditors in the cases of MedPartners Provider Network and Watts Health Foundation. He has also represented equity committees, serving as co-counsel for an ad hoc equity committee in Seracare, and the Official Equity Security Holders’ Committee in President Casinos, Inc. Mr. Patterson is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy and served as the Regent for the Ninth Circuit from 2014-2018. He has served as Secretary (2004—2005), Vice President and Seminar Coordinator (2005—2006), President (2006—2007) and member of the Board of Governors (1998—2001, 2003—present) of the Financial Lawyers Conference, member of the Debtor-Creditor Relations Committee of the Business Law Section of the California State Bar (1992—1995) and the Bankruptcy Sub-Committee of the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (1994—1997). He has participated extensively in continuing education panels for the American Law Institute, Financial Lawyers Conference, American Bankruptcy Institute, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and other organizations. Mr. Patterson was named the 2011 Century City Bankruptcy Attorney of the year, has been ranked in Chambers for many years, and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA, among other honors.
