Bio

Lucila Hemmingsen is a commercially-driven international disputes lawyer that consistently aims to obtain efficient and effective client-focused results. She is dual-qualified in civil and common law and her practice focuses on cross-border dispute resolution, investigations and public international law matters, with a particular emphasis in Latin America. Luli advises and represents clients in high-stakes matters conducted in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Her experience of over two decades runs a broad gamut of industries, including infrastructure and construction, renewable energy, mining, LNG, oil and gas, retail, finance and investments, real estate, international trade, and tax (including implications of OECD measures). Most recently, Luli has been tapped as a go-to expert for all matters related to energy transition and new technologies, including hydrogen, carbon credits, carbon capture, batteries, electrification, etc., guiding clients from inception (identifying and mitigating potential risks), throughout the life of the project, and when disputes arise. Luli also accepts arbitrator appointments in international disputes. Her clients have praised her for her ability to boil down complex concepts of law from both civil and common law jurisdictions to create winning strategies. Clients and colleagues consistently refer to her as a “seasoned advocate who is exceptionally sharp”, with “extensive experience in large, complex international disputes”, a "brilliant lawyer", "pragmatic and conscious of clients' needs", "hard working", and have stressed her "acute legal analysis" and "deep insight regarding the legal and commercial dynamics in Latin America." Luli has been consistently selected by Who's Who Legal as a Future Leader in International Arbitration, and by Benchmark Litigation as a Rising Star, has been recognized by Legal 500 Latin America, and ranked by Latinvex amongst Latin America's Top 100 Female Lawyers for several years in a row. Most recently, Luli was named one of Crain’s New York Business 2022 Notable Women in Law. Luli also maintains an active pro bono practice, including matters involving public international law and human rights law. She promotes those efforts as a member of the Cyrus R. Vance Center International Justice's Committee. Luli is also deeply involved in a number of diversity and women empowerment initiatives and organizations. She managed the international Mentoring Program for Women in International Law of the American Society of International Law for over 5 years and has also launched a mentoring program for women under the auspices of the Argentine Lawyers' Association of New York (where she serves as Vice President).
