Daniel Coman serves as a partner in Ice Miller’s Business Group, where his diverse practice has a strong emphasis in general corporate law and federal taxation as it impacts businesses, their owners, and key executives. Daniel’s federal taxation focus includes corporate and individual taxation, employee benefits and ERISA, estate and gift tax planning and administration, international taxation and tax exempt organizations. He is also experienced in negotiating, structuring, documenting and implementing a wide variety of commercial transactions for his clients, including extensive experience in handling mergers and acquisition transactions ranging from as low as a few million dollars to numerous transactions in excess of $100 million. Daniel also has extensive experience in representing wealthy individuals and their families, many of whom are business owners, with their estate planning. Many of these projects require developing a comprehensive plan to (1) reduce taxes (income, estate, gift, generation skipping and excise taxes); (2) manage the transition of wealth from one generation to the next to avoid unnecessary complexities, costs and delays; (3) maintain appropriate control of the transition process in the hands of the senior generation; (4) develop a succession strategy for the business or any specialty assets; (5) arrange for sufficient liquidity to ease transition problems; (6) create asset protection mechanisms to safeguard the family wealth from dissipation due to various risks; and (7) foster sustaining legacies through advanced philanthropic planning. Daniel formerly was a partner in a sizeable Chicago-based law firm and later the founder and named partner of Coman & Anderson, P.C., which was later known as The Coman Law Group, P.C., a law firm with offices in DuPage County and Chicago. In addition to being an attorney, Daniel holds the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) designation and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also a licensed Illinois Real Estate Broker. Daniel is a former chairperson of the Chicago Bar Association Corporate Tax Division and a former member of the Executive Committee of the Federal Taxation Section of the Chicago Bar Association. He is also former president and executive board member of the 4,000-member Fox Valley Chapter of the Illinois CPA Society in addition to having held numerous statewide committee positions with the Illinois CPA Society. He also has served on a variety of advisory boards, subcommittees, and boards of directors for a variety of for-profit and philanthropic organizations. Daniel has lectured at various tax and corporate law conferences on behalf of the Chicago Bar Association, DuPage County Bar Association, Kane County Bar Association, Illinois CPA Society, and numerous law firm sponsored presentations. He has been honored with the highest possible rating (AV) in the Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory.
