John Hughes Bio

John Hughes’ practice is focused in the area of ERISA/employee benefits. John counsels clients nationwide on a wide variety of issues involving all kinds of employee benefit plans including 401(k), deferred compensation/409A, profit sharing, pension/defined benefit, 457, 403(b), governmental, 125/cafeteria, and health and welfare plans. John provides advice to public and private companies, tax-exempt entities, governmental entities, plan committees, and individuals. He also represents plan industry professionals and organizations such as financial institutions, administrators, accountants, and investment consultants. John counsels clients on a broad spectrum of plan related issues including legal compliance, mergers and acquisitions, fiduciary responsibility, plan administration, plan corrections, plan design, litigation, and tax qualification. John was the Coeditor-In-Chief of a well-established nationally circulated monthly newsletter entitled 401(k) Advisor. He is a former President and Board Member of the Boise Chapter of the Western Pension & Benefits Council. John frequently writes and speaks on ERISA/benefits-related topics. He is currently the author of the Bloomberg Law Benefits Guide Chapter on the Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System (“EPCRS”). John is originally from Port Washington, New York. Earlier in his career, prior to his significant experience as an ERISA/benefits attorney, John was the Managing Editor of the California Western Law Review, an intern to the Hon. Kevin Thomas Duffy (S.D.N.Y), an Assistant Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel of the Department of the Navy in Washington D.C., a litigator at two prominent San Diego law firms, a Pro Tem Judge for the San Diego Superior Court, and a member of the Louis M. Welsh Inn of Court.
