As a commercial litigator and trusted strategic advisor, Javid Afzali counsels domestic and international companies on issues involving a range of business, real estate, land use and environmental matters. He works directly with company principals and in-house counsel to help them achieve their goals related to corporate governance, project development, corporate and commercial dispute resolution, and business and ownership separations. Javid utilizes mediation or arbitration in dispute resolutions when deemed beneficial to the desired outcomes. Given that many of Javid’s global clients are from Europe, Asia and the Middle East, he is knowledgeable about issues that multinational organizations face doing business in the United States, particularly in New York state, as well as contract disputes governed by New York law. An extensive aspect of Javid’s practice involves start-to-finish project development. He assists companies, developers, commercial property owners, individuals and municipalities across New York with permitting and litigation involving land use and zoning, environmental approvals, construction contract disputes, insurance coverage and municipal rezoning and annexation. In this capacity, Javid has appeared before state and federal courts and administrative agencies such as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York State Department of State, and the New York State Department of Labor on matters involving siting of solar, wind and nuclear power generation facilities, mining operations, and large scale gaming and recreational facilities. Javid has successfully overturned wrongful denials of municipal and environmental permits and defended challenged permits through Article 78 reviews, declaratory judgment actions, and appellate review. Javid has extensive experience representing commercial developers, property owners, cooperatives and condominiums in New York City. Javid has appeared before all levels of courts in New York City and Brooklyn to advocate for his client’s rights. He serves these clients’ unique needs in the areas of corporate governance, finance, shareholder/unit holder dispute resolution, contractor disputes, sponsor disputes, real estate, permitting, and buildings violations.
