Carlos Escoto is co-leader of the Environmental practice and coordinator of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practice in Galicia. He is an expert in environmental law and brings sophisticated regulatory and sustainability insight to the most complex transactions and projects in the market. With over 22 years of experience, he is a recognized specialist in the development of infrastructure, renewable energies, oil & gas, mining, manufacturing industries, and tourism projects. Since joining Galicia’s Environmental practice in 2013, he has focused on drafting, enacting, and the enforcement of environmental policy and regulation, and on the environmental aspects of mergers and acquisitions and financing projects. He has participated in some of the most complex operations in recent years, such as Actis’ purchase of Intergen’s energy portfolio, Abertis and GIC’s acquisition of 70% of Goldman Sachs’ stake in Red de Carreteras de Occidente, and the International Finance Corporation and Bancomext’s financing of the Potrero Solar power plant, currently being developed by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV). Recently, Carlos has been committed to the implementation of ESG aspects in such high-profile operations. He obtained his law degree from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and holds a Master in Science in Environment and Sustainable Development from University College London (UCL), with a British Chevening Scholarship. Furthermore, he is a LEAD Fellow, after completing his specialization studies at the Colegio de México (COLMEX) as part of the XVIth Cohort of this international program in 2012. He is recognized as “Up & Coming” in The 2023 Chambers Latin American Guide in the Environment practice. Likewise, he has been ranked as an expert lawyer in The Legal 500 2023 Latin American Guide in the same practice. He is member of the Galicia’s Sustainability Committee.
