Bio

James Pohl is an experienced patent attorney who helps his clients succeed by providing forward-thinking advice on intellectual property issues relating to electronics, software, and applied physics. James has a true passion for providing strategic advice designed to protect and leverage his clients’ investment in intangible assets. James’ record of success includes helping clients rank in the top 10 of their respective categories on the IEEE’s patent scorecard. In the past 10+ years, James has developed world-wide patent portfolios, including authoring well over 100 original patent applications and successfully prosecuting many hundreds of applications. Before joining FisherBroyles, James gained professional experience at prominent Washington, D.C. law firms, where his work included being co-counsel for Respondent Teleflex in the U.S. Supreme Court case KSR Int’l Co. v. Teleflex, Inc., 550 U.S. 398 (2007). He has also been interviewed by national television news organizations on issues such as voting machine technology and the United States Supreme Court case District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008). He draws on his unique blend of experience in business, law, and engineering to provide balanced advice on topics such as: aligning IP strategy with business goals, developing patent portfolios, due diligence in connection with acquiring patents, legal opinions on patent (in)validity and (non)infringement, tech-related agreements, pre-litigation advising, risk assessment, and design-around analysis. James has over 25 years of technical and hands-on engineering experience in leading-edge technologies. His technical expertise includes experience in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, wireless devices (LTE, 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth), semiconductor devices, the Internet of Things (IoT), satellite navigation systems, audio / video devices, optics, and sensors. His experience also includes cutting-edge research in the areas of fiber optic devices and superconductors. Prior to becoming an attorney, James was an electrical engineer in a major telecom equipment manufacturer’s R&D department. He also served in the U.S. Navy, where he was a submariner, taught nuclear power plant operation, and provided technical assistance during the upgrade of two submarine reactors. James has been a licensed Professional Engineer (Texas / Voluntarily Inactive) since 2003.
