Al Gourley is a Partner at the firm’s London office. He is a globally-recognised resource lawyer, having led many UK and Canadian initial public offerings, secondary and alternative finance transactions, as well as mergers and acquisitions, in the resource sector, particularly cross-border transactions involving Europe, Africa, Australia and Canada. Al is also the Chairman of the World Initiative of Mining Lawyers based in Europe. Al is known for his knowledge of “pure” mining transactions, including royalty, streaming, carried interest, joint development, joint venture, option, offtake, marketing and other mining transactions. He also has experience working in-house with one of the world’s largest mining companies, as well as more recent experience as CEO of a UK mining company producing industrial minerals for sale to the world’s leading chemical companies. Al is also a key strategist who helps private equity and other groups build positions and secure influence or control over companies and assets, as well as manage litigation and disputes. Al has litigated trade cases before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, published books and articles on competition and anti-trust law and authored a paper commissioned by the Government of Canada entitled: "A Report on Canada's Conspiracy Laws: 1889-2001 and Beyond". Al helped to establish the firm's Johannesburg office in late 2003, was Managing Partner of the Johannesburg office from 2005 to 2011 and served as Deputy Managing Partner of the London office from 2007 to 2009. Al has been Managing Partner of the firm’s London office since 2016.
