Barry Cohen is a Partner who serves as Chair of our Environmental Law Practice Group. For over thirty-five years, Mr. Cohen has counseled clients in a wide array of environmental matters. He devotes a significant portion of his practice to matters involving contaminated properties. In this regard, Mr. Cohen represents clients in connection with the investigation and remediation of contaminated properties, the redevelopment of Brownfield sites, and litigation commenced under the federal Superfund Law, the New York State Navigation Law, and other federal and state environmental statutes and theories. Mr. Cohen also represents members of the regulated community in matters commenced by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and local environmental and health agencies. He has represented parties in matters involving leaking underground storage tanks, air emissions, industrial discharges, community right-to-know reporting, the management and abatement of asbestos-containing materials, petroleum spills and the handling, storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous chemicals, hazardous waste and pesticides. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Cohen was a Partner in the Environmental Practice Group of another law firm. He also worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and interned in the Environmental Protection Bureau at the State Attorney General’s Office. He earned his Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law, where he was the President of the Environmental Law Society and the founder and a contributing editor of the Hofstra Environmental Law Digest. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ithaca College. Mr. Cohen co-chairs the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Environmental Law Committee. He previously served on the Boards of the Long Island Housing Partnership, Three Village Youth Lacrosse and the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, and also served on the “Good Earth Gala” committee for Cornell University’s Cooperative Extension. Currently, Mr. Cohen serves on the Board of the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation, and volunteers for Good Shepherd Hospice.
