Catherine C. Cownie is a member of BrownWinick. Since joining BrownWinick, Katie has practiced in the area of business and corporate law. In addition, she specializes in issues impacting health care providers and is currently the Co-Chair of the firm’s health law practice group. As a part of Katie’s health law practice, she represents a wide range of clients in the health care industry, including hospitals, long term care facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, home health agencies, community based providers, individual practitioners and practitioner associations. Her representation includes Iowa Certificate of Need related issues, federal and state licensure and regulatory matters, Medicare and Medicaid enrollment and changes of ownership, and issues surrounding Medicaid Credible Allegations of Fraud and other billing related disputes. As part of her practice, Katie also provides guidance to health related businesses on federal and state privacy laws. Her privacy law experience includes assisting clients with HIPAA and HITECH compliance and responses to audits and investigations related to alleged breaches. In addition to her healthcare practice, Katie has significant experience working with clients involved in the renewable fuels area. Her experience includes providing representation related to entity organization, contracting, and raising equity. Katie received her B.A. in Psychology from Chaminade University in Honolulu in 1996. She received her J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in May of 1999 and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1999. Katie is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association having served on the Board of Governors of that organization from 2011-2013. She is also a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the Iowa Society of Healthcare Attorneys, the Iowa Association of Community Providers, the Iowa Alliance in Home Care, the Polk County Bar Association and the Polk County Women Attorneys. Katie serves on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Environmental Council and on the planning committee for the Greater Des Moines Partnership Do More in the City committee.
