Tim Golder has more than 40 years' experience in intellectual property law. Tim is a highly experienced adviser on copyright, designs, confidential information and trade marks, as well as trade practices issues dealing with misleading and deceptive conduct. He is adept at drafting licensing, distribution and franchising agreements. He also undertakes substantial work in registering and protecting trade marks, designs and domain names. Tim has a substantial litigation practice in the intellectual property field, enforcing the rights of clients including before the Courts. Tim's vast experience includes advising Australian Grand Prix Corporation, Australasian Food Group, Bapcor, Coles, Cricket Australia, Cricket World Cup 2015, Dairy Australia, Decor, Fiat Chrysler, Ford Motor Company, Forever New, General Mills, The Herald and Weekly Times, The Just Group (including Just Jeans, Peter Alexander and Smiggle), Mazda, Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation, Mondelez (Cadbury), Nike, Nissan, Reece, Reliance World Corporation, Ssangyong, Simplot (Leggo's etc), TAG Heuer, Tommy Hilfiger, Tyco, VAAM Management (Mark Webber), Victoria Racing Club, Visit Victoria, Victorian State Government, Wesfarmers and Wheel Pros. Tim is a registered trade marks attorney and a partner of the firm's associated firm, Allens Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys, where he is in charge of IP registrations for a range of clients. He is a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, the Intellectual Property Owners' Association Anti-Counterfeiting Committee, the International Trademark Association, the Franchise Council of Australia, the Copyright Society of Australia, the Australian and New Zealand Sports Law Association and the Victorian Society for Computers and the Law. He has authored and co-authored a number of proposals to government on behalf of the Law Council of Australia's Intellectual Property Committee, and for many years was an adviser to the Trade Marks Sub-Committee of that Intellectual Property Committee. Tim was from 2005 to 2022 (inclusive) a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice, published by Oxford University Press. He is also a member of the Commercialisation of Brands Committee of the International Trademark Association (INTA). Tim chaired the Law Council of Australia's Designs Sub-Committee which made detailed submissions to Government urging changes to designs law, which led to the enactment of the Designs Act 2003. Tim has been ranked by Chambers Global as one of the five "top tier" leading lawyers in Australia for copyright and trade mark law for each year from 2007 to 2024 (inclusive). He is also consistently listed (including in 2023) as a leading practitioner by International Who's Who Legal (WWL) for Trade Marks, Franchise and Sports & Gaming. At the Who’s Who Legal Global Awards presented in London in 2018, 2019 and again in 2023, Tim won the award for the Trade Mark Lawyer of the Year and in 2023 Tim was named by Who's Who Legal as a Global Elite Thought Leader in Australia for Entertainment Law. Tim has been named by World Intellectual Property Review as one of its 'WIPR Leaders 2023’. In 2023 Tim was also recognised in the Doyle's Guide as one of the Leading Intellectual Property Lawyers in Australia.
