Bio

Mr. Scheerer founded Stonybrook Capital in 2012 to build on over 20 years of experience, relationships and technical skills in (re)insurance and investment banking and capital markets businesses, on Wall Street. That same year, he sold a minority ownership in the Firm to Holborn Corporation, a reinsurance intermediary which was founded in 1920 and is the fifth largest in the country today. In 2016, he sold an additional minority stake to a renowned family office in New York and separately sold an additional minority stake a prestigious family office based in Bermuda. reinsurance executive who has founded, built, and successfully exited, a number of insurance businesses over his career. Today, Stonybrook is a global firm which has also added a profitable reinsurance brokerage operation as well as an advisory effort focused on alternative investments in our sector including insurtech and Lloyds of London. Before founding Stonybrook Capital, Mr. Scheerer spent time at Willis Capital Markets & Advisory and previously was an investment banker at Benfield Advisory Group, Ltd. At Willis, he started and led practices within the group focused on the programs, crop, and accident and health sectors. Before joining the world of specialist advisors attached to large reinsurance brokerage firms, he worked for traditional Wall Street firms such as Oppenheimer & Co., and Furman Selz, LLC. Mr. Scheerer is also an active investor in the sector, and is a frequent speaker on the state of the (re)insurance industries. Since, 2014, Mr. Scheerer has sat on the board of Atlantic American Corporation (NASDAQ “AAME”) which is a publicly traded holding company of various insurance industry companies. He serves on the Audit Committee and the Compensation and Equity Committee of AAME, serves as an “Independent Director” of the Board, and is designated as an “audit committee financial expert” for purposes of the Securities Act of 1933. Mr. Scheerer has also attended the NYSE Board Governance school. Mr. Scheerer also sat on the board of Insurance Acquisition Corp., a Cohen sponsored Special Purpose Acquisition Corporation. Finally, Mr. Scheerer is the chairman of the investment and advisory committee of the Inter-Atlantic Stonybrook Insurance Technology fund. Throughout his career, Mr. Scheerer has advised on thousands of insurance industry M&A transactions as well as capital raises up and down the capital stack (i.e. debt, mezzanine, and common equity). Mr. Scheerer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations.
