Varun Gupta is the country managing director for India. He set up the firm’s operations in India and is responsible for its overall growth and strategic direction. Additionally, he oversees the Southeast Asia and Japan operations of the firm. Varun has over 20 years of experience in valuation and financial advisory services. He has advised clients across a wide range of industries including IT/ ITES, energy (conventional as well as renewable), pharma and life sciences, infrastructure, internet and eCommerce, telecom, media and entertainment, etc. He has provided valuation opinions for purposes as diverse as financial reporting, strategic decision making, tax planning, restructuring, collateralization, transfer pricing, litigation and dispute resolution. Besides valuation of businesses in general, he specializes in valuation of early stage companies, intangible assets (e.g., brands, intellectual property, IPR&D, etc.) complex financial instruments, contingent consideration and ESOPs. He has also provided expert witness testimony in courts of law. His prior experience includes stints with the valuation and financial advisory arms of Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has been a speaker at several seminars/ workshops, including valuation workshops organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) where he speaks on valuation of intangible assets. He has also spoken at valuation workshops at IIM Kozhikode, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon and ICFAI Hyderabad. He was a key speaker on valuation of trademarks at an INTA Roundtable. Additionally, he is a regular and sought-after speaker on the valuation of early stage companies and eCommerce companies and has spoken at forums organized by ASSOCHAM, IVCA, VCCircle and other similar bodies. He is also regularly quoted by the financial press on evolving issues related to valuation, including valuation of brands, celebrities and sports franchises. Varun holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta.
