Bio

Howard E. Johnson, FCPA, FCA, FCMA, FCBV, CPA, CFA, ASA, CF, C.Dir. is a managing director at Duff & Phelps in the M&A Advisory practice. Howard has been advising business owners, executives, and corporate boards on acquisitions, divestitures, financing and shareholder value matters for more than 20 years. He also works closely with the firm’s Valuation Advisory Services practice on strategic value advisory mandates, and the Litigation Support practice as an expert witness on tax-related valuation matters before the courts. Howard is the author of several books on the subjects of corporate finance and valuation published by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, including: Strategic Acquisitions (2014); Selling a Private Company (2013); Business Valuation (2012); and Building Value in Your Company (2011). He is also the editor of Corporate Finance for Canadian Executives (2007) and a contributor to Canada Valuation Service (periodical), both published by Thomson-Carswell. Prior to joining Duff & Phelps, Howard was the co-founder of Veracap M&A International, a boutique corporate finance firm, and co-owner of Campbell Valuation Partners Limited, a boutique valuation firm. He also served as the President of M&A International, a global corporate finance organization. Howard has held senior management positions in industry, including Corporate Planning Manager at a multinational food company and CFO at a privately-held industrial equipment company. He has also served on the board of directors for public and private companies, as well as various professional and not-for-profit organizations. Howard was awarded a Fellowship from the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Certified Management Accountants of Ontario (both now part of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada), as well as a Fellowship from the Canadian Institute of Chartered Business Valuators. In addition, Howard holds the designations of Certified Public Accountant (Illinois), Chartered Financial Analyst, Accredited Senior Appraiser (business valuation), Chartered Director, and the Corporate Finance qualification. Howard earned a Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University (Governor General’s Award, 1988), a Graduate Diploma in Public Accountancy from McGill University (Kenneth F. Byrd Prize, 1989), and a Master of Business Administration from McMaster University (D.M. Hedden Gold Medal, 1992).
