Bio

Jeff van Steenbergen is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Azimuth Capital Management. Azimuth is advancing a differentiated impact energy transition investment strategy focused on North America and selectively Europe. The Firm has its principal offices in Mountain View, California and Calgary, Alberta. Azimuth has managed four funds, three of which are still active, totaling $3.4 billion of cumulative capital including an active LP co-investment program for leading university endowments, pension funds, insurance companies and certain European families. Prior to jointly establishing the Firm, he was co-head of North American Oil & Gas with JP Morgan. Jeff has been active in the North American and international energy sector for 35+ years and has a wide range of experience in energy transition, infrastructure development, technology, and oil and gas as a private equity investor, investment banker, and in operations and major project development planning roles with ExxonMobil and in field operations with Schlumberger. Jeff has been an investment professional for 25+ years and has broad experience building unique businesses and in private equity, capital markets, mergers and corporate finance. He also has 11 years of energy sector operating experience in North America, Asia and Western Europe, including eight years in frontier offshore drilling operations. While at ExxonMobil Jeff was part of a small group that had a first response role in respect of major well control incidents around the world. His education includes a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston and an MBA in International Business and Finance from Dalhousie University in Halifax. Jeff also attended a series of Executive Programs at Stanford, INSEAD and Harvard focused on strategy, corporate governance and corporate finance. He holds a US Coast Guard Master’s License (Captain) for Mobile Offshore Drilling Units and is a professional engineer registered in the Province of Nova Scotia. Jeff currently represents Azimuth on the boards of Magma Global, Monolith Materials, Steelhead LNG and ACM LNG. He is an experienced corporate director and over time has served on 15 Canadian, US and European public and private company boards. As well, Jeff is a member of the Board of Governors of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. He and his wife Kim have been involved with the Banff Centre for many years. Kim and Jeff also support two uniquely talented Canadian performing artists who have achieved wide international recognition. Kim and Jeff have three children and six grandchildren – all living in Calgary. Jeff’s interests include being close as possible to oceans and mountains. He is a dedicated ocean kayaker and also enjoys back country skiing and cycling.
